WASHINGTON (June 9, 2021) – Today, the American Chemistry Council (ACC) recognizes Ethyl Corporation as the 2021 Responsible Care® Company of the Year in the small company category, for the 7th time in the last 10 years.
“Responsible Care is the chemical industry’s guidepost, pushing us to drive continuous improvement in our environmental, health, safety and security performance,” said ACC President and CEO Chris Jahn. “Ethyl Corporation’s long track record of outstanding safety performance, commitment to continuous improvement and product stewardship demonstrates their outstanding leadership and dedication to the tenets of Responsible Care. I am proud to recognize Ethyl Corporation with one of ACC’s highest honors, the Responsible Care Company of the Year Award.”
Safety is a core value at Ethyl Corporation. Ethyl’s “Actively Caring” program, established in 2013, has positively influenced safety behavior throughout the company, encouraging each employee to look out for the safety and welfare of others with the goal of achieving an injury-free environment. The company emphasizes the "safety pyramid" to its employees and contractors, with a high focus on hazard recognition and incident reporting and investigation of incidents and hazards, including near-miss conditions or incidents, with the thought that paying high attention to relatively minor concerns can prevent occurrence of significant injuries or releases.
The company’s dedication to safety is demonstrated through eight consecutive years of zero recordable injuries. Ethyl has received the “Perfect Record Award” from the National Safety Council for safety performance 10 out of the last 11 years.
With a focus on continuous improvement and sustainability as well, Ethyl has reduced electrical usage by 30 percent from 2007 to 2020, reduced waste generation by 46 percent from 2019 to 2020, and has demonstrated a continued downward trend in Hazardous Air Pollutant emissions since 2015.
Ethyl Corporation also has an active commitment to product stewardship, particularly for its primary product group – motor fuel antiknock compound (MFAC). Ethyl pre-screens prospective customers, including an assessment of both physical facilities and practices/procedures, and will not sell these products to customers unless they have been well-vetted for their abilities to receive, store, process and use these products in a safe and responsible manner.
Lastly, Ethyl supports community and environmental projects where they operate, both financially and through employee engagement in volunteer events, including community environmental clean-up events, bloods drive, food banks and children’s charities, among others.
To be eligible for the Company of the Year award, ACC members must demonstrate they have met and surpassed Responsible Care performance criteria, including: achieving a safety performance rating in the top 10 percent of companies in their size category, with no significant process events in the previous year; positive performance measures in the areas of transportation safety, process safety and emissions reduction; and demonstrated improvements in EHS&S performance, product stewardship, distribution safety and emergency preparedness.
