WASHINGTON (April 24, 2020) – Chlorine bleach and other disinfectants should never be injected or ingested into the body to treat infections such as COVID-19. Such a practice could be lethal or cause serious bodily harm. COVID-19 patients should consult their medical professionals for therapies and treatment.

Chlorine bleach is critical to combating the spread of COVID-19 as it effectively disinfects surfaces that inactivate the virus SARS-CoV-2. However, chlorine bleach should never be administered inside the body under any circumstances.

Additionally, chlorine bleach should always be safely stored and handled. This includes keeping it out of the reach of children and only mixing chlorine bleach with water. Chlorine bleach should never be mixed with other disinfectants or cleaners as this may cause a chemical reaction that generates hazardous gases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends making a solution of one-third cup of regular, non-splashless, unscented chlorine bleach to one gallon of water to disinfect surfaces for SARS-CoV-2.

Chlorine and the products derived from chlorine chemistry are essential to combat the spread of COVID-19. In addition to chlorine-based surface disinfectants that can reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2 from surfaces, chlorine chemistry is vital in preventing and treating COVID-19 in healthcare settings. This includes its role in the manufacture of polycarbonate face shields and PVC IV bags and tubing, among other products used in healthcare settings.
