It’s National STEM Day! It’s no secret that STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) keeps society going and continues to help create the innovations needed for a safe and sustainable future. Here are three ways to celebrate National STEM Day with us.
1. Take a look at how our lives are rooted in STEM.
Science, technology, engineering, and math cannot be ignored in our everyday life. Daily, we rely on processes and products made possible by STEM — from how we get to work, whether bike, car, or train, to the food and drink on our Sunday night dinner tables. STEM has led us to some of the things we just couldn’t imagine living without, including our cellphones and computers, clean water delivery directly to our faucets, products we use to clean and disinfect our homes, and so much more. Today, let's appreciate all of the inventions and innovations brought to us by STEM.
2. Donate to the Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI).
The chemical industry recognizes there is a lack of diversity throughout the STEM workforce. To help address this challenge, in November 2020, ACC alongside the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), Chemours, and HBCU Week Foundation partnered to establish the Future of STEM Scholars Initiative.
FOSSI creates pathways for more underrepresented groups to pursue STEM degrees through scholarships, leadership training, mentoring, and internship opportunities. With the support of more than 40 ACC members and affiliated stakeholders, FOSSI provided 151 $40,000 scholarships in 2021.
This National STEM Day, donate to help shape the future of STEM and join our efforts towards diversity, equity, and inclusion.
3. Encourage STEM majors to apply for the FOSSI Scholarship.
Do you know a high school student interested in STEM? FOSSI is welcoming applications for our 2022 class now. Encourage your friends, family and community members to apply for the scholarship by February 15, 2022. There are a few requirements, including preferred STEM major, minimum GPA, demonstrated financial need, and interest in pursuing a career in chemical manufacturing, engineering, environmental health, sustainability or other related chemical industry fields, among others. Learn more here.
STEM is vital to helping create a safe and sustainable future for generations to come. Join us in celebrating the people and products made possible by STEM today and every day.
