The Titanium Dioxide Stewardship Council (TDSC) is composed of manufacturers of titanium dioxide (TiO2), and was formed to promote the safe use of TiO2 through research, product stewardship, advocacy, and outreach efforts within the framework of responsible chemical management, as well as to conduct the following activities, within or outside the United States:

  • Sponsor research to advance scientific understanding of health and environmental safety of TiO2;
  • Communicate findings of research and regulatory issues to industry, academia, government, and media; and
  • Advocate science-based public policy.

Titanium Dioxide Facts

TiO2 is a white solid inorganic substance that is thermally stable, non-flammable, poorly soluble, and not classified as hazardous according to the United Nations’ (UN) Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS).

TiO2 use is ubiquitous in our society. Most of the surfaces and items that are white in color contain TiO2. Thus we often find TiO2 containing materials in our homes, workplaces and public areas. It is used in a vast range of industrial and consumer goods, including in sunscreen, cosmetics, paint, plastics, paper and wallpaper, food, and more!

TiO2 is a global product with many important applications that has been shown to be safe in its intended uses over many decades.

TDSC sponsors research directed at understanding the health and environmental profile of TiO2. TDSC’s members have also sponsored extensive research in areas of mammalian toxicology, aquatic toxicity, environmental occurrence, fate and degradation, and pharmacokinetics.
