The Center for the Polyurethanes Industry (CPI) has prepared these guidelines to provide general information and to explain the precautions and practices associated with the safe handling of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) in the truck bed lining (TBL) industry during low pressure system applications. Specifically, this document will discuss engineering controls (e.g., adequate ventilation), personal protective equipment and general work practices common to the TBL industry.
These guidelines were developed as a supplement to the information provided in the supplier’s Safety Data Sheet (SDS), which is an important source of safe use and handling information for a product. This document is intended to provide helpful information, examples, and guidelines to users of MDI who are sophisticated users of chemicals and who know of the risks associated with the use of the chemicals. Such users should understand the information provided in the MDI suppliers’ SDS.
